Development Contributions

Created for Greenlight Jam 2023, Pawn’s Gambit was originally planned as a boss rush rogue-lite. But scoped down to focus on intense boss battles due to time constraints.

  • Designed and drafted the original game concept and GDD.
  • Developed and programmed the entire game in Unity.
  • Learned and implemented Unity’s HDRP pipeline, VFX Graph, and Shader Graph for advanced lighting and effects
  • Rigged and animated all characters.
  • Managed project coordination via Trello and Discord.
  • Led a team of five, including two artists, a junior designer, and a composer.
  • Completed the game in under three weeks, winning Greenlight Jam 2023’s "Ready to Release" award and later nominated for IGDC 2023’s Student Game of the Year.

Game Concept

A chess-themed boss rush where you play as a black pawn, who decided to speak up in the king's court about the sacrifices that the pawns make for the rest of the army. Banished until he proves his worth, the enraged black pawn embarks on a ruthless quest to dismantle the white army, piece by piece.

Core Mechanics

  • Boss Rush: The crux of Pawn's Gambit, deliver combos and take down the Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen, and ultimately the King.
  • Dodging: Dodge incoming telegraphed attacks in enclosed spaces and hold out till you see an opening.
  • Elemental Boss Fights: Each piece of the army specializes in a certain element, posing a new challenge each time.

Art & Sound

  • Visuals: 3D graphics featuring beautiful hand-drawn cutscenes and visual effects.
  • Sound: Music that fits each boss's nature and their elemental power.
